KITCHEN
THE PROBLEM:
These clients were frustrated with their old, outdated kitchen: Appliances didn’t work and storage space was limited. Because they no longer used the kitchen, these clients just ordered take-out. They had always dreamed of having a clean, modern kitchen they could use to cook and entertain with family and friends.

THE CHALLENGES:
The existing finishes, cabinetry, flooring, and lighting were worn and outdated, and there were pony walls separating the cabinetry and appliances. The large fluorescent light box soffit was suffocating the room. The existing floor plan design was very choppy and did not clearly delineate the work areas, the island was inefficient, and traffic flows did not make sense.

THE SOLUTION:
The designer created a floor plan to make the work areas distinct, including areas for prepping, cooking, cleaning, and storage, which would allow multiple cooks in the kitchen. To enlarge the space, all nonsupporting walls and the light-box soffit were removed. The new island now included a new prep sink, second trash pull-out, microwave space, and beverage station. The cooking area, now on one wall, offers twelve square feet of usable working space. The spacious cleaning area allows for a large single-sink bowl with ample countertop space; it also houses a double trash compartment for recycling. To open the space and address the lack of adequate storage, a wall pull-out pantry, a second large pantry next to the refrigerator and corner Susan cabinet, and upper cabinets were placed all on one wall.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
The finishes are a blend of warm brown, gray, espresso, and white with blue accents. The custom-finish walnut cabinetry compliments the striped marble, which has become one of the focal points of the kitchen. The pin-striped gray porcelain flooring (from Spain) creates a modern element and the pin-striped soft-white glass backsplash accentuates the stainless steel countertop. A second focal point in the kitchen is the espresso custom-finish stile-and-rail panels that hide the refrigerator and pantry on the storage wall. The blue glass island pendants and paintings bring color to the room.
The result is a clean, modern kitchen with defined work areas—no more take-out!

POWDER ROOM
The original small, outdated powder room, located next to the new modern European kitchen, was out of place. The clients’ love of wall coverings, the color blue, and birds made it easy to find a wallpaper to enhance the space. A decorative ornate circular mirror and crystal ceiling light bring a Victorian elegance and sparkle. To unify it with the adjoining kitchen, we included a modern white porcelain vessel, faucet, and floating espresso vanity. This little powder room can now stand on its own.
